About Course

Course Overview – Penetrating Atherosclerotic Ulcers

  • Focused training on the diagnosis, imaging, and management of PAUs of the thoracic and abdominal aorta

  • Reviews the pathophysiology and natural history of PAUs and how they differ from intramural hematomas and classic dissections

  • Provides guidance on CTA interpretation, ulcer morphology, and progression risk factors

  • Discusses conservative monitoring vs. endovascular intervention, including patient selection

  • Covers TEVAR planning, stent graft considerations, and access management for PAUs

  • Includes real-world case examples, imaging libraries, and treatment algorithms

  • Summarizes current evidence and clinical guidelines relevant to PAU management

What Will You Learn?

  • In the Penetrating Atherosclerotic Ulcers course, you will gain focused, clinically applicable knowledge to accurately diagnose and manage this often-underrecognized but potentially life-threatening aortic pathology. By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Understand the pathophysiology and clinical significance of PAUs, including their differentiation from intramural hematomas, aortic dissections, and classic aneurysms
  • Identify high-risk ulcer characteristics using CTA and MRA, including depth, location, wall thickness, and associated hematoma
  • Apply risk stratification frameworks to determine which patients require surveillance vs. intervention
  • Plan and execute endovascular treatment (TEVAR) for PAUs, including device selection, landing zone considerations, and intraoperative strategies
  • Manage acute vs. chronic presentations, and understand progression risks such as rupture, pseudoaneurysm formation, or conversion to dissection
  • Recognize subtle clinical presentations and asymptomatic cases discovered incidentally on imaging
  • Stay current on guidelines and literature, including management recommendations from SVS, ESVS, and AHA/ACC
  • Interpret and discuss case-based examples, improving confidence in managing real-world patients with complex aortic atherosclerotic disease
